Exhibition News: A Feminist History Tree Ring Heads to 21c Museum Opening July 15 & Hamptons Highlights
Opening July 15 in an exhibition including Jenny Holzer, Mickalene Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Zoë Buckman, Michele Pred and more
My artwork Dendrofemonology: A Feminist History Tree Ring is a response to so much of what is happening today and throughout time. I distill 50,000 years of history through a feminist lens into 32 milestones that show it’s all a matter of perspective. At a time when women’s rights, progress, and our constitution are being put to the test, I hope that Dendrofemonology can show a greater context of history and serve as an reminder that what we do today shapes what follows. I view this work as a moveable monument and I’m excited to share the news of the year-long exhibition that it’s heading to next. First, its journey so far…
Dendrofemonology was first publicly installed on the National Mall in Washington D.C., where it served as a catalyst for 50 feminist organizations to come together.
Next it was in Madison Square Park in NYC for the Mobilization for Women’s Rights and the Planet to kick off Climate Week…
This past month it’s been at the Women’s Art Center of the Hamptons where an edition will remain until the end of July. We just had a invigorating gathering there yesterday. Highlights below. What a beautiful setting and wonderful to see all the people who came. A big thank you to Wendy Van Deusen and Piraye Yurttas Beim for helping make all this happen.
It is now headed to the midwest for 21c Museum’s year-long exhibition The Future Is Female with 50 feminist artists including Jenny Holzer, Mickalene Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Zoë Buckman, Michele Pred and more. I have always wanted this work to be in the midwest and the south and absolutely love 21c’s exhibitions and collection.
21c Museum is a multi-venue museum located in seven cities. One of the largest contemporary art museums in the U.S., and North America’s only collecting museum dedicated solely to art of the 21st century, each property features exhibition space open and free of charge to the public, combined with a boutique hotel and restaurant. 21c acquired Ken’s and my first video art installation together, Smashing, back in 2008 as part of their permanent collection, so we have a great history together.
I’m honored to be with these fellow artists and that Alice Gray Stites, the 21c Chief Curator & Museum Director, has invited me as the visiting artist to give a special presentation the evening of the opening on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, from 6-8pm. RSVP here. Info on the opening celebration and how to RSVP here.
This exhibition at 21c St. Louis is open 24/7, free of charge, and will remain on view until June 2027.
The night of the opening there will be a "The Future Is Female Dinner." This dinner, meticulously created to complement the exhibition, offers a unique 4-course culinary journey, crafted by female chefs from across 21c's esteemed restaurant portfolio.
